Mr. Opanashuk recently retired from the FBI where he was assigned to the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, Behavioral Analysis Unit 5 (BAU-5). He is an FBI Certified Behavioral Profiler. Prior to retirement, he managed the Criminal Investigative Analysis Training Program (CIATP) which is the first phase of training for all new Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) profilers. The CIATP consists of approximately 600 hours of classroom training administered over five months. Additionally, Mr. Opanashuk oversaw the accreditation of the CIATP by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation Board.
Before BAU-5, Mr. Opanashuk was assigned to BAU-4, where he consulted on cases involving serial murder, serial sexual assault, kidnapping, and single homicides involving adult victims. Mr. Opanashuk consulted on hundreds of cases over the course of his six-year assignment.
As a Field Agent in the FBI’s Buffalo Division, Mr. Opanashuk worked on many cold case homicides with a variety of local and state law enforcement agencies. Mr. Opanashuk coordinated the FBI Buffalo Cold Case Homicide Working Group with members from each local and state law enforcement agency.
Prior to Buffalo, Mr. Opanashuk was assigned to the FBI's Portland Division, where he worked violent crime, organized crime, and counter-terrorism matters.
Mr. Opanashuk served 14 years on the FBI's Evidence Response Teams and was Senior Team Leader in both Portland and Buffalo. As part of ERT, in November 2001, Mr. Opanashuk deployed to the Fresh Kills Landfill in support of the World Trade Center recovery effort. Mr. Opanashuk also served on the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team for the Northeast Region.
Mr. Opanashuk graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in the State of New York. He served as Second Assistant District Attorney for the Wyoming County District Attorney’s Office in Warsaw, New York. He helped found the Wyoming County Domestic Violence Task Force and was an active member of the Sexual Assault Response Team. His prosecutions focused on Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Physical and Sexual Abuse.
Mr. Opanashuk graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. During this time Mr. Opanashuk focused independent study on serial murder.
